Configuring user information by considering trust threatening factors associated with automated vehicles

Abstract Background The accelerated development of automated driving technology has raised the expectation that commercially available vehicles will be increasingly become ubiquitous. It been claimed are safer than conventional manual vehicles, leading to fewer accidents. However, people expect not only better but also near-perfect machines. Given accidents involving vehicle do occur and highlighted by media, negative reactions toward have increased. For this reason, it is critical research human–machine interaction develop suitable levels trust between human users newly introduced systems. Method We start study defining user distrust in terms four types trustthreatening factors (TTFs) along with trust-threatening situations. Next, 30 volunteer participants, we conduct a survey humanin-the-loop experiment riding simulated experiencing 21 scenarios. Result In information configuration type for alleviating TTFs, participants preferred receive on external object recognition all TTFs general an average necessity level score 24.2, which was 8.0 points higher scores other types. haptic modality-based method least compared methods, namely visual auditory. Conclusion study, focused participants’ subjective responses complementary quantitative studies, results these studies put together expected serve as foundation designing interface can induce among users.
